Chapter 5
"No! You know yourself the budget doesn't allow it," Kedon whispered as he was folding clothes. The baby still woke up at the slightest noise, and just the peace and quiet of the only few minutes they both knew it would be, made Kedon a fierce protector of that silence.
Tarell saw Kedon grin at his halfhearted attempt to help, but folding was so foreign to him he eventually only took towels. He was rather proud of himself, even though his little pile was slightly haphazard.
Kedon continued, "As much as I would love to get away from...from the crying, too, we can't afford a babysitter and go out for dinner."
Tarell sighed. He needed to come up with a way to get Kedon out of the house. Hiring a babysitter was the perfect opportunity to not only take Kedon away from the evil influence of that doll, but to also give the computer genius he had employed the opportunity to get in and reprogram it to a "less active frame of mind." Tarell was bound and determined to have his way with Kedon before Kedon's parents came back, and they were due home in less than two days. He needed the doll's cooperation. Two hours away with Kedon alone, and he would have that cooperation. It was fail-proof. It was perfect.
It was...well, maybe it was a little wrong.
For some reason there was a slight cringe at the thought of messing with the doll. It did seem to have the ability to think. But, of course, Tarell knew that was impossible. It had all been coincidence. However there was a small part of him that questioned it just a tad, and now that Kedon had actually given the doll a name, it was really weighing on him.
"Yeah, I know, but you have to remember your partner is a wealthy son of a bitch, so we can afford it. Besides, who's going to know?" Tarell knew it wasn't going to work, but he had to keep the negotiations going until he came up with a plan acceptable to the "I'm doing this right" Kedon.
"No! That's cheating, and besides, I'll know. So will you. We have to live by the budget, and the budget does not allow for us to do both."
Do both? Oh! Tarell quickly took out his smart phone and brought up the spreadsheet he had laid out those first couple of days of the project, back when he gave a damn. He slid his fingers along the screen until he was at the bottom, tapped in a few calculations, and finally looked up into Kedon's eyes.
His own eyes, he knew, were beaming. "Okay. You're right. We can do one or the other. I'm fine with that. Let's hire the babysitter and pack a picnic. We can simply go to the park or wherever you want, as long as we get you away for a few hours. What do you say to that?" Tarell knew Kedon would not understand this sudden shift in priorities.
